Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation is now accepting applications for the permanent full – time Recreation Coordinator position. Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation is looking for a highly motivated and qualified person who will be responsible for developing positive recreational initiatives for all ages that will put a strong emphasis on access to and engagement in traditional cultural awareness and will encourage mental health and well-being. The Recreation Coordinator is also responsible for assisting in the overall planning, implementation and execution of all youth and recreation programs and events, which should be in alignment with the needs and interests of the community.        

The suitable candidate will be able to perform the following duties:

  • Develop, enforce, revise and plan in collaboration with the front-line workers, a comprehensive community recreation plan and policies to meet the needs of all Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation (SXFN) community members;
  • Plan policies and program promoting social change, recreation, leisure, exercise, wellness, and wellness health;
  • Determine the needs of the SXFN community and incorporate traditional and cultural education in the program;
  • Work with local Elders to develop programs for young people to learn about traditional cultural knowledge;
  • Create and manage quarterly, semi-annually and annually financial budgets for the recreation program;
  • Work, develop and promote the benefits of recreational activities and manage them in the community;
  • Organize and facilitate events like sports, cultural camps, arts, crafts, music, drumming, social recreation, hobbies,

movie nights, taking into account the needs and desires of children, young people, adults and elders;

  • Act as a liaison and collaborate with other First Nations, inter-agencies and funding agencies;
  • Participation in networking, training and seminars for awareness, capacity and attitude improvement;
  • Facilitate and attend cultural camps for events, athlete’s practice, sports trainers, and team journeys;
  • Ensure compliance with insurance, legal and health & safety obligations related to all events and activities;
  • Prepare and submit activity reports and month end reports for Leadership and Administration;
  • Ensure the security of all facilities by locking all doors, securing windows, and setting the alarm;
  • Prepare and submit funding applications and reporting accountabilities;
  • Other duties assigned;

The suitable candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in health or social services or a combination of 2 to 4 years of relevant experience and education may be considered;
  • High degree of motivational techniques, problem solving and group work ability skills required;
  • Effective organizational, planning and communication skills, including public speaking required;
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs e.g. MS Office, spreadsheet, excel, email etc.;
  • Ability to self-regulate, meet deadlines, have attention to detail;
  • Must have Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and willing to travel to affiliated organization locations;
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, organized and a team player;
  • Must have First Aid and CPR or willing to obtain the training, if provided;
  • Ability to work well with others, build effective interpersonal relationships and maintain confidentiality;
  • Current satisfactory criminal record, driver’s abstract & vulnerable sector check;
